Master Derrick Henry, Jr.,

affectionately known as D.J., is the son of Dr. Stephanie Pasley-Henry and Mayor Derrick L. Henry ,Sr. He stands out at his school as a student leader. Derrick made his first public presentation at three years old. As a Kindergartener, Derrick joined two of his peers under the direction of an assistant principal at his school, in starring in a stellar presentation titled “Do you Believe in Me”. Following this production, he has frequently been asked to speak for various groups and programs throughout Daytona Beach. His solo performance presented during the Volusia County Institute for all Volusia County School Administrators entitled “Engage Us or Enrage Us” went Viral on social media. He has subsequently given presentations on the dangers of drugs with an original song entitled “ Say No to Drugs, No! No! No!” which landed him in first place in his category at his school. He presented at a Links, Inc. event highlighting achievements and growth in the City of Daytona Beach. His most highly acclaimed monologue entitled “The ABC’s of Black History,” written by his mother, was presented at the President’s Assembly at Bethune-Cookman University, Holly Hill K8 School, and several church and community events throughout the city. Derrick was the Keynote Speaker at Stewart Memorial Methodist Church’s Women’s Day where kids were highlighted. His message encouraged women to “Look, Love and Lead ” the children of this world. He was the main speaker at the Emerald Ball, highlighting 44 distinguished men in the community; his speech was entitled “Boys Like Me Need Men Like You.” Derrick presented as the Opening Keynote Speaker, along with his mother, at the National ESEA Conference, formally named the National Title I Conference, in Atlanta Georgia. An avid reader, Derrick has read over 500 books. He enjoys Nearpod assignments and has completed two online Spanish courses. Derrick counts Math as his favorite subject. His favorite book is “Engage Us or Enrage Us: Schools Make the Difference” Written by his mother. The book was inspired by his school experiences and urges teachers to richly engage all students with meaningful instruction that reaches them. Derrick enjoys basketball, swimming, bey blading, vacations with his family and spending time with his grandparents. He has a younger sister, Paisley Renee and an older brother Michael.
